About The Sun-Room

I have turned myself inside out to try to find the words. Beneath my skin is a scream.

Jess was a healthy young woman in her early twenties, newly graduated from university. Life awaited. A post-viral illness struck her down. With fury and tenderness, she has written an unflinching account of chronic illness grief.

I am unravelling in losses like ribbons piled up around my feet.

This is not a recovery memoir reflecting on past illness and charting a return to health. It is an immediate, electric prose poem, a scream of anguish, an annihilating and liberating exploration of self-identity. A gentle surrender to the present.

Praise for The Sun-Room

“A personal and powerful look at how we define ourselves and measure worth. It doesn’t offer easy answers, but it’s a celebration of survival and the ongoing search for meaning. Fierce, haunting, and beautifully written, it’s a book that deserves to be read and felt deeply.” — Sarah Barley-McMullen, Long Covid SOS Charity

“[..] a mighty little book. Devouring it in one quick session does not do it justice, and I know I will return to it. […] This is what it's like. And there is beauty in the awfulness of it all. Jess's use of words is poetic and raw, each sentence is beautifully crafted and true.” — Dr Elke Hausmann, GP living with Long Covid

“Jess’s interaction with each of these stages [of grief] is neither frivolous or shallow; her words reflect a deeply intimate connection with all aspects of her illness. The sharpest edges of sickness are in no way numbed or bypassed.” — Natasha Gilbert, Neurodivergent Therapist & Poet

[…] angry, brave, beautiful and deeply introspective. I urge everyone to read this.” — Hannah at Leeds Waterstones, Bookseller Review
